Blog - Portraiture Photographic Sessions

Whilst pulling files for another blog, my cursor landed on a family portrait that I took a few years ago. My sister, her husband and babies and I went out to ‘Papa’s’ house for Easter that year. At the time, Dad and his wife lived approx 3 hours west of Brisbane at a place called Karara.  Our father, who is no longer with us was relatively fit and healthy at the time.  It never occurred to me how special his portrait would be.  Making it even more special is that my Dad is with his youngest grandchild.

It never ceases to amaze me the power of the family portrait.

McHolden Honeymoon – we set off from Brisbane in search of beautiful landscape, the day after our wonderful Vue Restaurant wedding at Boonah.  We headed down the south coast, towards New South Wales, first stop,  Salt at Casurina Beach.  A very generous couple gave us a few nights as an engagement gift. Such a splendid place to kick back and recuperate from the wedding.  The camper trailer was all packed, so off we went after a few days, to Urunga Heads Caravan Park – our favourite place in the whole world.  Urunga is surrounded by beautiful landscape, beaches and walking paths. A few days relaxing, eating, drinking and enjoying the beach before heading off to Clarence River region.  Our next stop was Clarence River Wilderness Lodge. WOW. Incredible country, incredible hospitality.  We had the place to ourselves, so everything was perfect. Can’t wait to go back! Here is just a couple of little snaps from along the way.

Over the years, I have had many the email requesting images of grandparents/parents for a funeral. I have often heard ‘You have taken the best photograph of Mum that we have ever seen’….Nearly 12 months ago, I lost my father.  On looking for an image to put on the casket, I had real trouble finding one that was ‘appropriate’.  Don’t get me wrong, there are stacks of wonderful images around of my Dad, though nothing recent that was ‘formal’ enough.  Even being the photographer in the family, I had not put the thought into needing such images – in fact, like the plumber who’s taps leak, I am too busy taking photos of other peoples families – not my own. Having said all of that,  I love this image so much.  I can see my brother and sister in Dad’s face (not sure where I disappeared to!) and he looks so very happy.  The child in me can very much relate to the man in this photograph.

Whilst we did not have a recent image to show of Dad, this one is a cracker!  It just goes to show how meaningful portraits really are. Missing you every day Dad. xxxx

It’s a lovely photo, Suz, I can see you as well.

What a team, and what fun we had with our vintage inspired photoshoot!!!  Meet Jen. Jen entered our competition just for fun, for something a little different. She loves the look, and feels very confident with it.  After Jessalee worked her magic creating a doll face, Jen and I braved the wet conditions and headed out onto location for some fun.  Stay tuned for more of the images from the session.
